Social Spotlight

Our social cause for January is one of our partners The Big Issue, The Big Issue is a humanitarian organisation that aims to help those in need, founded in 1991 by John Bird and Gordon Roddick, The Big Issue provides an avenue for people experiencing homelessness or poverty to generate an income from selling magazines, thereby helping them to reintegrate into mainstream society. Through their magazine, vendors are afforded the opportunity to trade without having to beg or scavenge for food. By working with local communities and governments, this ground-breaking initiative is making strides towards helping change the lives of people who are vulnerable by providing them with resources, skills, and the potential to move away from relying on state support.
Big Issue has also helped out 19 social enterprises through the Power up Scotland Programme which launched in November 2017 and have invested close to £500’000 into so far. In 2022 Brave Strong Beautiful was successful in winning investment through the Big Issue Power Up Program to support our scaling up, furthermore another Social Cause we have highlighted in a previous newsletter here Social Stories Club was one of the 19 social enterprises that successfully completed the three-month Power Up Scotland Programme in 2020 to get the funding to be able to build on the good work they currently do within their communities. Thousands of people have benefited globally, both directly and indirectly through this program’s positive impacts on social issues including mental health and housing crises. It is clear that The Big Issue are committed to eradicating poverty across multiple countries while also bringing hope and positive outcomes at an individual level. It’s truly inspiring how Big Issue has helped those in need by connecting them with crucial resources and forming supportive relationships between those attempting to break free from the cycle of poverty. If you would like to check out a Big Issue Vendor and support them there are several vendors throughout Edinburgh to pick up the Big Issue and even 3 on Lothian Road one the same street as one of our Brave Strong Beautiful salon.

Hairstyling in the METAVERSE?

Is Hairdressing going virtual? Is this the future of the industry?
L’Oréal enters the Metaverse with a partnership with Ready Player Me, (the world-leader in avatars for multi-app use), and working with 3-D artist Evan Rochette,
L’Oréal released the first in a series of selection of makeup and hair styles to become available for users to curate their personal avatar and push the boundaries of self-expression. Making interconnected virtual worlds a reality, avatars created on Ready Player Me are compatible with more than 4,000 games, including Spatial, HiberWorld, and VRChat. With more than three billion global gamers, this is a market that has huge potential to be tackled Asmita Dubey, chief digital and marketing officer of the L’Oréal Group, said: “We believe that the future of beauty will be physical, digital and virtual”. With many brands jumping into the Metaverse world such as fashion brands including New Balance and Pull&Bear and presents an opportunity for beauty brands to jump on the customisable avatar bandwagon, this could be where the ever growing digital world is heading.

Menopausal Hair Loss: Why it Happens and How to Manage it

Have you ever noticed your hair thinning as you begin menopause? Or finding that your hair breaks more easily after menopause? This is caused by the lack of oestrogen, as oestrogen is a hair-friendly hormone which helps to keep your hair in its anagen (growth) phase for longer and without this in our bodies it leads to the hair becoming thinner. Going through menopause can be a rollercoaster of emotions, the more common ones being irritability and sadness. This is why it’s important to make sure everyday is a good hair day, so we can still feel like ourselves.

It is important to maintain your healthy hair journey, and get into a routine of taking vitamins such as B12 and Omega 3. These are important to take for your hair as they promote healthy hair by providing the things lost during menopause. Also investing in bond building shampoos such as Olaplex and Nioxin, these both are recommended to help keep your hair feeling as good as new through menopause. They both contribute to strengthening and repairing bonds resulting in your hair feeling thicker, healthier and stronger.

When getting your hair done, you should tell your stylist you’re going through menopause so you can get the support you and your hair needs. Also so your stylist knows the correct products to use for you and your hair, especially when getting colours done as the hormones can affect the distribution. Getting regular trims and having breaks from colour and bleach will keep your hair looking as healthy as it can.

We at Brave Strong Beautiful are always here to support anyone who may have concerns and would like to know more about treating their hair on menopause just contact us here and we will try our best to support you through this tough time and get your hair back to its healthy self as best we can.
